WRITING A DEFINITION PARAGRAPH--The Definition of Bunkasai

The definition of Bunkasai festivals given by the Ministry of Education of Japan makes the events seem so dull, while actually they are not. In their curriculum guidelines, Bunkasai festivals are defined as “events which aim to use the results of everyday learning to heighten motivation”. Originally, the events are mainly purposed to show students’ achievements to their family and outsiders, especially for those ones who desire to enroll themselves to the schools. However, in the real practice, students display not only the achievements they get from their schooling, but they also show various interesting displays and performances—mainly for entertainment purposes—during the events. Students in every class and club of the schools present certain displays among the numerous ones, such as cafés, haunted houses, tea shops, food stalls, etc. There are also some dramas, dances, and band performances on the stage arranged in school yard or gymnasium. Since Bunkasai festivals are handled by students themselves, they can totally express their creativity into the events. Those annual events even inspire other schools in different countries to have the similar ones with different purpose and kind of displays and performances. In Indonesia, for example, Bunkasai festivals are not held to promote the schools’ activities but those events are rather to show the visitors about Japanese culture-related displays. Those facts prove that Bunkasai festivals in real practice are much more complex than its definition.
